Visit the Ylang Ylang Farm in Ecuador

Today is Valentines Day, Happy Valentines Day to you!!! Being the day of love, I thought it would be fun to show you why I love Young Living. It’s a simple, but important reason, their dedication to providing us with the highest quality essential oils! The amount of thought and care that goes into each bottle we receive is amazing. It may seem a little nuts to be talking about love in regards to a company on Valentines Day. But the truth is, I LOVE YOUNG LIVING!!!! I love the freedom their products have given me to take control of our health and swap out all the everyday toxic products we had been using. If you’ve ever tried replacing toxic for natural products, while not spending a fortune. You will understand my great admiration for this company!

The truth is, the essential oil industry has very loose regulations, little to none to be exact. Therefore, knowing where your essential oils come from, and how the company is producing these oils from the seed that is planted all the way till it is bottled is worth knowing. Just like anything else you’re putting on or in your body you want to know exactly what you’re getting, right?! Young Living is completely transparent, anyone can visit their farms and take part in the harvesting.  But, that’s not quite realistic for all of us with our busy lives to just pick up and visit the farms before we decide on an essential oil company to trust.

So I thought it would be fun to take a behind the scenes tour. February is when the harvesting of Ylang Ylang begins. If you haven’t tried Ylang Ylang yet, its intoxicating, a truly floral aroma. I love to wear this as a perfume. It helps to elevate my mood and my husband always seems to take notice and finds me a little more attractive when I do. In this video you will get to see where the Ylang Ylang that ends up in your bottle of essential oil starts out, at the farm in Ecuador. How each flower to be distilled is chosen and more. Not all essential oil companies have controls set in place to ensure the standards that Young Living guarantees. OK, enough of me… just watch the video, before I give it all away! 🙂

How to safely use essential oils

Most people are familiar with essential oils as a fragrance. Because, the vast majority of essential oils are only produced for their fragrance. When special care is taken to properly plant, cultivate, distill, and test essential oils to make sure the integrity of the plants healing properties have not been damaged or destroyed – you have something so much more than just a fragrance, you have Young Living essential oils.

So if you’re new to the concept of using essential oils for more than just a pleasant smell, here are some answers to questions you’ve probably had. Please note these answers only apply to the Young Living brand of essential oils.

How to safely use Young Living Essential Oils

Click image to save to Pinterest!

1. I’m new to essential oils. How are they used? – Each bottle of Young Living essential oil is labeled with directions for how that oil can be used, and these directions vary based on location. Check the product label for appropriate use directions. The label will tell you whether the oil should be inhaled or diffused, applied topically and how much to dilute, as well as if it can be taken internally as a dietary supplement. It’s also a good idea to have a reliable reference guide when using essential oils.

2. I see the term “carrier oil” used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it? – A carrier oil is a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil that can be used to dilute EO. YL V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex is an excellent carrier oil for all applications. Carrier oils ensure that EOs applied topically are comfortable. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the EO, and prevents waste due to excessive application. Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine or petroleum derivatives (petrolatum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils. Some people choose to avoid olive oil as a carrier oil because of its strong aroma and thick viscosity.

3. What is a hot oil? – “Hot oils” are oils that, when applied to the skin, can cause a hot or burning sensation. YL recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first use. To perform a patch test, apply 1-2 drops of EO to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1-2 hours for any noticeable reaction; usually reactions occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation or if you develop a rash, add V-6 carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed. Examples of “hot” oils include cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, peppermint, oregano, thyme, Exodus II, and Thieves.

4. What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation? – If discomfort or irritation occurs, stop using the EO, and apply V-6 or other carrier oil to the affected area. Never use water in an attempt to flush the oil off the skin, as this may increase discomfort. If a rash occurs this may be a sign of detoxification; drink adequate water to encourage the release and removal of body toxins. Toxins present in petrochemical based soaps and skin care products, detergents and perfumes may trigger some of the detoxification reactions. Consider discontinuation of these agents if a reaction occurs. Before using the EO again, perform a patch test (see above) and dilute with carrier oil as needed. Water drives oil into the skin and the eyes. If EO gets in your eye, flush with V-6 carrier oil to alleviate any discomfort. Discomfort should be alleviated within minutes. If eye discomfort does not subside within 5 minutes, please seek medical attention. Be aware that some documents suggest diluting the oil with water. Please dilute with carrier oil to ensure that discomfort is alleviated as quickly as possible.

5. Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas? – You should avoid
contact with EOs and sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals and mucous
membranes. If you choose to use the oil in any sensitive area, dilute 1 drop of the
essential oil to 5-10 drops of V-6 carrier oil.

6. How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use? – Proper usage is
indicated on each EO label. Please follow label instructions. The idea of “if a little is
good, a lot is better” is not always correct. Essential oils are very potent and
powerful– start low and go slow. In most cases 1-2 drops are adequate and using
more may waste product. Depending on the EO you can gradually build up to 3-4
uses per day if desired. Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for
adverse reactions.

7. Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing? – As with any medical
condition it is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the
advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is
experienced in EO usage. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and
excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Tansy (Tanacetum
vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and Wintergreen
(Gaultheria procumbens) as well as the blends and supplements that contain these
oils.

8. Can essential oils be used on children? – Many EOs are appropriate for use with
children, and they should be diluted prior to use. Some YL products are pre-diluted
with carrier oil as indicated on product label and are intended for direct application
on children. Children generally respond well to EO, and use of a carrier oil is
recommended. One-2 drops of EO such as Lavender, SleepyIze, RutaVala, Gentle Baby and
Peace & Calming may be diluted in carrier oil and applied to the bottom of the feet.

9. How does exposure to sun affect essential oil use? – Some EOs, especially citrus oils, contain natural molecules that react with sunlight (UV light) and cause a sensitivity reaction. All YL EOs and oil blends that contain these compounds are labeled with a warning to avoid sun/UV light for 12 to 48 hours after applying. Caution should always be used when starting to use a new oil: use patch testing (see above), dilute and apply the oil to skin that is protected from sun/UV exposure to reduce the risk of sensitivity. YL beauty and cosmetic products are formulated to remove sun-sensitizing agents to reduce the risk of sun sensitivity.

10. What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition? Can essential oils interact with prescription medications? – If you have a disease or medical condition, or if you are using a prescription medication, it is recommended that you consult with a health advisor who has experience with EOs prior to using an EO. Seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between the medication(s) and the essential oil(s).

Changes to the Everyday Oils Collection

November-New-Kit-WEB with info

Have you heard the latest news from Young Living yet? All orders placed on or after November 17th, 2014 in the US, that include The Everyday Oils Collection will have a new starting lineup! Peace & Calming is being replaced with Melaleuca Alternifolia, (commonly known as Tea Tree oil).  Valor is being replaced with Stress Away and the NEW bonus oil that comes in the Premium Starter kit is Citrus Fresh.

The Everyday Oils collection will still include Thieves, Frankincense, Lemon, Peppermint, Panaway, Lavender, Purification and Joy. Plus you can still purchase Peace & Calming and Valor separately.

How Exciting!!! I love that Young Living is constantly listening to their customers and keeping up with our needs. There have been supply issues with Valor due to it’s popularity and in order to keep it available for those who really need it, the decision to remove Valor from the oils included in the Premium Starter kit really is a good thing. This change will free up inventory without sacrificing quality. Another company in this situation may have avoided this by using 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th distillation batches, but not Young Living, their commitment to quality and integrity are part of what make them the world leader in essential oils!

By recognizing this demand and taking long term actions to address the valor issue, Young Living has purchased a beautiful farm up in Canada for growing and distilling black spruce, a crucial ingredient to Valor. They will also be growing and distilling ledum and yarrow at the Northern Lights Aromatic Farm. So if you love Valor, go ahead and do your happy dance now!

Since Stress Away already came in the Premium Starter Kit as a bonus oil, it’s not really an addition. For those who have yet to receive the PSK,  I am so excited for you to be able to experience this calming blend, especially since the hectic holidays are right around the corner and who couldn’t benefit from a little help from Stress Away? This oil is simple to use, you can either inhale a few deep breathes directly from the bottle, diffuse, wear as a perfume, or add 5-10 drops to some Epsom salts for a relaxing bath.

So lets talk about the newbie to the Everyday Oils Collection.

Melaleuca Alternifolia aka Tea Tree Oil. When I think about it, it makes perfect sense to include this oil to the lineup for so many first time oil users, since Melaleuca Alternifolia has so many practical uses, from skin issues to cleaning. Due to FDA guidelines, I can’t tell you just how powerful this little oil is (if you haven’t heard yet the FDA has recently come down hard on natural wellness companies. For example, because I sell essential oils as an independent distributor for Young Living I cannot discuss all the benefits of these oils, but a third party source like a reference book can. A little wacky I know, but better to stay compliant than get shut down and not have my oils!!! So to get around this and give you the information you need, as a gift for enrolling as a wholesale member by purchasing a Premium Starter Kit I will send you a starter guide specifically made to explain how to use the Everyday Oils and a Primary Usage Guide so you can learn more about other oils, conditions and uses. There are also tons of great reference books you can purchase yourself, click here to see my favorites.

And the NEW bonus oil that comes in the Premium Starter Kit is…

Citrus Fresh, this fragrant blend of essential oils contains: Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin, and Spearmint. Citrus Fresh is stimulating and can help to amplify creativity and wellness, eases occasional anxiety and works well as an air purifier when diffused. I also enjoy adding a few drops to my water for a refreshing treat.

This change does not affect price and it only applies to orders placed in the United States. So if you REALLY want Peace & Calming and Valor to be apart of your kit, order yours TODAY. If you’re excited for the new kit, order yours on November 17th, either way you’re getting an amazing collection of oils!!! If  you love natural remedies and want to live with less chemicals in your life you can’t go wrong with either one.

I am grateful everyday for these oils and I’d love for you to experience them too! Click below to learn more or to place your order.

Want some fun ideas for these FREEBIES from Young Living?

We love Ginger essential oil as a substitute for powdered ginger in recipes. As a general rule, you can use 1 drop for every teaspoon of powdered or grated ginger. Check out this fun, easy recipe for gingerbread people that the kids will love decorating with icing, candies, and sprinkles:

Gingerbread People

3 cups flour of your choice (may substitute Gary’s True Grit Einkorn Pancake and Waffle Mix)

1 tsp. baking soda

ÂĽ tsp. fine sea salt

2 drops Ginger essential oil

1 drop Cinnamon Bark essential oil

Âľ cup butter or coconut oil

Âľ cup firmly packed brown or coconut sugar

½ cup molasses

1 egg or vegan egg substitute

1 tsp. vanilla extract

In a medium bowl, whisk together dry ingredients; set aside.

In a larger bowl, beat together butter or coconut oil and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in remaining wet ingredients. Gradually add flour mixture just until dough forms; do not over mix. Press dough into a flat disk, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight or at least for 4 hours.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Roll dough to ¼ inch thick on a clean and lightly floured countertop. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are just beginning to brown. Cool completely, then decorate as desired!

While you and your family are making essential oil-infused gingerbread people, and through the whole season, diffuse Christmas Spirit essential oil blend. It combines everyone’s favorite scents of the season—Cinnamon Bark, Orange, and Spruce—for an irresistibly festive environment. You can even try dropping it onto unscented potpourri and packaging it in bags with colorful ribbons for a beautiful, memorable neighbor gift. They’ll love that it’s both thoughtful and guilt-free!

Remember this promotion is valid for any qualifying PV order, whether it’s a retail, wholesale or essential rewards order.

What does PV mean?

In case you were wondering what PV stands for? It just means personal volume (the amount of points you are ordering). Every item will list the PV next to the price. Usually PV equals the dollar amount of an item, but there are a few exceptions. For example, The Premium Starter Kit costs $150, but has a PV value of 100 points. So if you’re ordering the Premium Starter Kit and want to add a few more items to your order, this is an excellent way to qualify for FREE products!!!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions 🙂

Stress Away Essential Oil

Keep Calm and Keep Stress Away

Click image to save to Pinterest!

This graphic really says it all! Stress away essential oil is my go to oil on days when life is just overwhelming. Whether I have too much to do and not enough time, or too much swirling around in my brain; just knowing that I can quickly open the bottle and take a few deep breaths, inhaling this fragrant blend helps to calm me down and keep me moving forward.

Lately, my days have been navigating how to keep up with my energetic eighteen month old daughter. She’s just transitioned to one nap a day…oh how I’ve been dreading this day. It may sound awful that I want my daughter to be awake less, but trying to get my to-do list done with her around becomes a whole new project. I am grateful that she is healthy and curious, but that also means she wants to get into EVERYTHING!!! Somedays I feel like I’m just running around getting nothing done which is exhausting.

Young Living’s Stress Away™ essential oil blend is a natural solution created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life. Stress Away is the first product to contain the unique stress-relieving combination of lime and vanilla pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. Stress Away also includes copaiba and lavender to reduce mental rigidity and restore equilibrium. Featuring powerful plant constituents, such as the cedrol found in cedarwood and the eugenol that occurs naturally in vanilla, Stress Away can help induce relaxation and reduce occasional nervous tension.

Stress Away is the perfect addition to a relaxing bath. I like to add about a cup of Epsom salts to the warm bath water and then I pour a handful of salts into my palm and add about 6 drops of Stress Away oil to them. I get my free hand wet and rub the salt/oil mixture together, allowing them to mix and fall into the bath water. Once they have emptied from my hands instead of just dropping my hands into the bath, I cup my hands in front of my nose and take a few deep breaths then I rub the remaining Epsom salts/oil mixture onto my face. The salts act as a mild exfoliant and the scent of the Stress Away stays with me longer, helping me to fully relax!

I have to tell you, I probably would not have bought this bottle on my own. I was introduced to Stress Away because it came in my Premium Starter Kit as a bonus oil. I am grateful to Young Living for compiling such a thoughtful and useful kit for anyone to start using essential oils, even when they’re not sure what they need to get started, they make it so easy! See below for how you can receive this oil, ten other oils, a home diffuser and more…everything you need to get started incorporating these amazing oils into your life!

I hope you will find this helpful in your time of (Stress Away) need!

Infant Massage using Essential Oils

Easy Infant Massage using Essential Oils. Visit www.EssentialOilsObsessed.com to learn how or to order oils.

Click image to save to Pinterest!

A few years ago, a friend of mine told me about  the many benefits of infant massage. She was getting ready to adopt her first child and wanted to do everything in her power to bond with her new baby, to relieve any stress he may be feeling from all the new changes, but most importantly to let him know he was LOVED, to relax now that he’d found his forever family!!

After all, love is what we all want and whether our babies are adopted or not; we want them to feel loved too.

But I have to admit, when I first heard the term, “infant massage” I thought, I can’t do that…. I have no idea how to do that…darn, I wish I knew how to do that!!!! Well let me tell you, it’s not that hard. It just sounds intimidating or at least it did to me. 🙂

Luckily, I learned how to incorporate infant massage into my daughter’s life from the book, “Gentle Babies” by Debra Raybern. This has now become apart of our evening bed time routine. My daughter loves it. And I believe it has something to do with her sleeping through the night. She now knows to place her little hands in front of her mouth and nose and inhale the relaxing oils after I’ve applied them to her….it’s so stinking cute! I use a base of organic coconut oil (about a TBSP) and either 1 drop of Young Living’s Lavender essential oil or 1 drop of their Peace and Calming blend of oils. You can also mix up a batch and store it in an airtight glass if you don’t want to mix it up each time.

Let me just quickly say, PLEASE do not go out to the store and buy any old essential oil and try this. I will only use the Young Living brand because I know their oils are not adulterated, cut with synthetic chemicals or fillers, and only come from the first distillation, these are all important since our skin absorbs everything we place onto it in less than 30 seconds. And our babies are so precious and pure they deserve the best!!! If you wanted to read more about why I only use Young Living, click here.

Here are some excerpts from “Gentle Babies” on the benefits and the how to’s for infant massage using essential oils.

learn about essential oils

One of the many benefits to infant massage includes promoting bonding. Over the years, baby massage has also shown beneficial in assisting overall growth and development, sound sleep, relaxation and reduced fussiness. Additional benefits include relief from the discomforts of gas, colic and digestive complaints. Improvements in respiratory, circulatory and immune system function also have been reported. Gentle massage using therapeutic-grade essential oils diluted in high-quality carrier oils, is enjoyable for both baby and mom or dad. Parents find the special quality time with baby develops a special bond and using essential oils to support the baby’s health give parents confidence in their ability to respond to the child’s needs.

Cross-cultural studies show that babies who are held, massaged, carried, rocked and breastfed, grow into adults that are less aggressive and violent, and more compassionate and cooperative. Recent research shows benefits for premature infants and children with asthma and diabetes. Mothers with postpartum depression have shown improvement after starting infant massage.

Think of the baby massage as a gentle stroking of the body, not the vigorous, deep tissue, Swedish variety. Ideally both the parent and baby should be in a calm relaxed state. However, massage also can help calm a baby; a fussy child may respond well to massage with Lavender or Peace & Calming oil. This may be before bath or bedtime. It is best to wait at least one hour after baby’s feeding.

The room should be warm, rather than cool. A temperature of about 78 degrees is good. The baby should lie on his or her back on a padded blanket or towel. The parent can either stand over the baby if using a bed or massage table (we use our changing table) or sit on the floor with the parent’s legs form a diamond shape where the baby can lie with his head cradled in the adults feet. Leave the diaper on, but uncover the baby’s arms, legs and torso. Be sure to remove all jewelry so as not to scratch the baby.

The parent should place 4-5 drops of the massage oil ( I use about a TBSP organic coconut oil and add 1-2 drops of essential oil) place it in your hands and rub together to warm both the oils and your hands. Apply the oil with long gentle strokes on the arms, legs and then the torso. Make the strokes gentle, but not ticklish. The direction of the massage can be in both directions, but end with strokes towards the heart. In the case of digestive concerns (colic, gas, etc), massage in small circles from the right to the left side of the body – the same direction the colon flows. If massaging the scalp, use small circular motion as if shampooing the baby’s hair.

During the massage it is fine to softly talk or pray, hum, sing and or play softy music. To further bond with the baby, maintain eye contact during the baby massage.

The massage may last 10 – 30 minutes, depending on the mood of the child and the desired results of the massage. Keep a warm towel or blanket nearby to cover the massaged area and keep baby from becoming chilled.

Massage may be done near or around the navel area and spine, but do not focus on these areas. Every parent is capable of giving his or her baby a wonderful massage. A great way to learn more about baby massage is to find a massage therapist skilled in baby or infant massage to teach specific techniques depending on a child’s health challenge.

If gas is an issue, hold the legs under the knees, then gently press the knees up towards his or her tummy. This position can help the baby expel gas.

I hope these tips have helped to empower you to add infant massage into your baby’s routine!!!

You may or may not know this, but our feet have points on them that correspond to different parts of our bodies. Take a look at this great chart which outlines these areas for baby.

Customized Foaming Hand Soap with Essential Oils

Super Simple DIY hand soap using essential oils. Visit www.EssentialOilsObsessed.com for more natural DIY recipes or to order oils.

Click image to save to Pinterest!

I love this recipe! It’s non-toxic, gentle on my hands, and smells great. Like those fancy soaps, but without the fancy price. And it’s so simple to make, you just need 4 things.

1. Distilled Water

2. Pure Castile soap, I like Dr Bronner’s Organic, Unscented Baby Mild. You can find it at Whole Foods or online at Drugstore.com. It’s a little pricey, around $17.00 for a quart, but it’s meant to be diluted and lasts a really long time. The quart size I buy can make 32 bottles of this recipe, that comes to fifty-three cents per bottle. It comes in smaller sizes too, that cost around $4.00, in case you want to start slow 🙂

3. Essential Oil of your choice. I use lemon for my kitchen and it smells divine! I chose lemon for it’s uplifting aroma. But, you can customize this recipe with any oil. I think any of the citrus oils are great; orange, grapefruit, citrus fresh, lemon myrtle. I also like lavender or thieves for the bathroom.

4. A Foaming Dispenser, I bought mine at the Container Store, you can also reuse a foaming dispenser bottle you already have.

My easy DIY foaming hand soap ingredients. Visit www.EssentialOilsObsessed.com for more all natural DIY recipes or to order oils.

So here’s what you do.

1. Add 2 TBS. of Castile Soap to your foaming soap dispenser.

2. Add 5- 10 drops, Essential Oil of your choice. Then swish it all around in the bottle.

3. Fill your foaming dispenser bottle 3/4 of the way with distilled water.

That’s it you’re done! SO EASY.

P.S., In case you were wondering  why  I use Dr Bronner’s. First of all, it works really well and the ingredients in it are all legit… stuff you can recognize and pronounce 🙂

Ingredients in Dr Bronner’s Unscented Baby Mild Pure-Castile Soap:

Water, Organic Coconut Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Fair Deal Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Citric Acid, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

All Natural Relief for your best friend’s Anxiety

Natural remedy for dog anxiety

This is our sweet Gracie. Before we adopted her she was in a Puppy Mill. It makes me so sad to think about what she may have endured in her Puppy Mill days yet so happy to know she is in a loving home now. In the last 7 years that she has been apart of our family she has gotten much less skiddish. But loud abrupt noises, like fireworks or thunderstorms cause extreme anxiety for her. So I did some oil research and during our last thunderstorm, which went on for hours…no joke; I decided to try a drop of Valor on the back of her neck (the area where you would normally apply flea/tick medicine). And then diffuse Peace & Calming.  The relief was almost instantaneous. And what a relief for me too, knowing my sweet Gracie didn’t have to be terrified anymore. These two fantastic oils are included in the Everyday Oil Collection. And if you’d like to learn more about them, check out my Premium Starter Kit page; where I go into more detail about their properties and uses.
