Make your own Non-Toxic Hand Sanitizer

We all know that washing our hands with good old fashion soap and water is the best way to keep germs and sickness away. But, when I’m on the go, in and out of stores, running errands, or out and about with my little one who HAS to touch everything; and then stick her hands right in her mouth we need hand sanitizer!

Hand sanitizers are everywhere these days! But, have you ever considered what’s really in your hand sanitizer? Chances are they contain alcohol, triclosan, or both! The alcohol in most traditional hand sanitizers simply dry my hands out too much. And triclosan, oh boy! No, thank you. I was shocked when I first learned about the possible side effects of triclosan. Especially, since it’s in so many personal care products. If you haven’t heard of triclosan yet, here’s an interesting read. This revelation was actually what drove me to finding an alternative to the traditional hand sanitizer I had been using.

Here’s the good news!

Making your own hand sanitizer is easy when you have Thieves essential oil and a few other common household ingredients. Thieves essential oil contains Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. This blend is basically germs worst nightmare!

Now for the Recipe! What you’ll need.

  • Aloe Vera Gel
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Distilled Water
  • Thieves Essential Oil
  • Peppermint Essential Oil  *optional
  • Mini funnel *optional
  • Dispenser bottles (you can reuse ones you already have)

How to make your own Non-Toxic Hand Sanitizer!

The easiest way to do this is to add your ingredients directly to the dispenser you plan on using. I have a mini bottle attached to my purse that I bought from Target. You can reuse an old bottle or make a spray if you’d like, just use more water.

Step 1. Fill your bottle a little more than halfway with Aloe Vera Gel.

Step 2. Use a pin or scissors to poke a hole in one Vitamin E gel cap and add to bottle. Or add 1/4 tsp Vitamin E oil.

Step 3. Add 10-15 drops of Thieves and a few drops of Peppermint essential oil.

Step 4. Place lid on and shake well.

Step 5. Fill the rest of your bottle with water and shake to mix everything together.

Voila… that’s it, you’re done!

See how easy it is to avoid traditional toxic products when you have essential oils! I hope you enjoy making and using this as much as I do 🙂
