The natural and effective way to clean your makeup brushes

Hey ladies, do you put off cleaning your makeup brushes? Me too!!! Well not anymore. I’ve got a beauty hack that is just too good, not to share!

The non toxic way to quickly clean makeup brushes using melaleuca alternifolia essential oil.

Click image to save to Pinterest!

One of the reasons I procrastinate this chore is because it usually requires me standing over the sink washing and rinsing, washing and rinsing for what feels like forever. There has to be a faster and more effective way right? I have bought products specifically made for cleaning makeup brushes and have not found them to expedite the process. Plus, they’re usually comprised of some not so great for you ingredients. So the other day, I had an idea! What if I add a drop of Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) oil? My thinking was, it’s so great at zapping my zits, maybe it would help to really clean my brushes and prevent future breakouts. So I added a drop to the cleanser I was using, (I make my own) you can get my easy and non-toxic recipe here. To my surprise the makeup was melting away. To say Melaleuca Alternifolia sped up the process is an understatement! I have never experienced anything like this, even with products specifically made for this purpose. This beauty hack is just too good not to share!

Here’s what I do.

For my brushes and powder pads, I add a pump or two of cleanser to my palm, then a drop of Melaleuca Alternifolia. Then I swirl and press the brush/pad into my palm to release the makeup, rinse with water and repeat until completely clean. It used to take me at least 10 minutes to clean one brush! Now I can do one brush within 1-2 minutes!

Here’s why I love this so much!

Not only am I saving time, (maybe not a lot, but hey when you’re a Mom every minute matters. 😉 But, I also have peace of mind knowing my brushes are squeaky clean and free from the zit causing nasties. Most of all, I love that I don’t need to use toxic products to get the job done!

It’s so cool, you just have to try it!

I’m so happy Melaleuca Alternifolia is now included in the Premium Starter Kit. I keep finding fabulous new ways to use this oil and it has quickly become one of my favorites!

Happy Oiling,

Visit the Ylang Ylang Farm in Ecuador

Today is Valentines Day, Happy Valentines Day to you!!! Being the day of love, I thought it would be fun to show you why I love Young Living. It’s a simple, but important reason, their dedication to providing us with the highest quality essential oils! The amount of thought and care that goes into each bottle we receive is amazing. It may seem a little nuts to be talking about love in regards to a company on Valentines Day. But the truth is, I LOVE YOUNG LIVING!!!! I love the freedom their products have given me to take control of our health and swap out all the everyday toxic products we had been using. If you’ve ever tried replacing toxic for natural products, while not spending a fortune. You will understand my great admiration for this company!

The truth is, the essential oil industry has very loose regulations, little to none to be exact. Therefore, knowing where your essential oils come from, and how the company is producing these oils from the seed that is planted all the way till it is bottled is worth knowing. Just like anything else you’re putting on or in your body you want to know exactly what you’re getting, right?! Young Living is completely transparent, anyone can visit their farms and take part in the harvesting.  But, that’s not quite realistic for all of us with our busy lives to just pick up and visit the farms before we decide on an essential oil company to trust.

So I thought it would be fun to take a behind the scenes tour. February is when the harvesting of Ylang Ylang begins. If you haven’t tried Ylang Ylang yet, its intoxicating, a truly floral aroma. I love to wear this as a perfume. It helps to elevate my mood and my husband always seems to take notice and finds me a little more attractive when I do. In this video you will get to see where the Ylang Ylang that ends up in your bottle of essential oil starts out, at the farm in Ecuador. How each flower to be distilled is chosen and more. Not all essential oil companies have controls set in place to ensure the standards that Young Living guarantees. OK, enough of me… just watch the video, before I give it all away! 🙂

Essential Oils for Romance

Do you want to create more romance in your life? There’s an oil for that!

Essential Oils For Romance

Click image to save to Pinterest!

I think we can all agree that scents play a strong role in attraction.  But did you know why? When inhaled essential oils travel to the olfactory system. The olfactory lobe of the brain is part of the limbic system, the same area that produces sexual desires. So while chocolates and flowers are great, essential oils are the gift that keep giving!

Here are my top picks.

For him:

Hong Kuai has a pleasing, woody fragrance that supports a deep sense of relaxation. It can be worn as a cologne or applied topically to the insides of forearms, thighs, or feet daily along with Idaho Blue Spruce to inspire romance.

Shutran is an empowering essential oil blend that is specially designed for men to boost feelings of masculinity and confidence. Its inspiring aroma appeals to both men and women, and although used like a cologne, Shutran does not contain any synthetic ingredients. Instead, it is formulated with pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils, including the exclusive-to-Young-Living Idaho Blue Spruce, a refreshing, invigorating essential oil to both body and mind.

Top Picks for Her:

Ylang Ylang  has a sweet, soft, flowery fragrance that has made it a romantic favorite. In Indonesia, the petals are often strewn across a marriage bed. Ylang Ylang is extremely effective in calming and bringing about a sense of relaxation, and it may help with releasing feelings of anger, tension, and nervous irritability. It has a long history in skin and hair care products, particularly in Asia, where it is used to promote luxuriant hair. You can wear it as a perfume, add it to your diffuser, or use as shown above with Idaho Blue Spruce.

Sensation™ essential oil is a wonderfully fragrant, powerfully romantic blend that is extremely uplifting and refreshing. It was formulated to enhance the enjoyment of special moments. 😉 This blend contains Coriander, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot, Jasmine, and Geranium. Trade in your chemical filled perfume for this alluring blend and let the good times roll!

For both of you!

Idaho Blue Spruce is an exclusive oil that is distilled directly from Young Living’s St. Maries farm in Idaho. This incredible oil contains high percentages of alpha-pinene and limonene, with a pleasing evergreen aroma that relaxes both mind and body. Beneficial to both men and women when applied as the graphic above states.

Valentines Day is right around the corner. Are you looking for an inexpensive, yet thoughtful gift for your lover? What about a massage? Who doesn’t love a massage!

Sensation Massage Oil leaves skin feeling smooth, silky, and youthful. The beautiful fragrance of Sensation may stimulate feelings of romance. You could also make your own massage oil using the essential oils of your choice combined with grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, or the carrier oil you prefer. I wouldn’t recommend using olive oil though, it has too strong of an aroma.

Light some candles, play soft music, dim the lights…you get the idea!

Happy Oiling,

How to safely use essential oils

Most people are familiar with essential oils as a fragrance. Because, the vast majority of essential oils are only produced for their fragrance. When special care is taken to properly plant, cultivate, distill, and test essential oils to make sure the integrity of the plants healing properties have not been damaged or destroyed – you have something so much more than just a fragrance, you have Young Living essential oils.

So if you’re new to the concept of using essential oils for more than just a pleasant smell, here are some answers to questions you’ve probably had. Please note these answers only apply to the Young Living brand of essential oils.

How to safely use Young Living Essential Oils

Click image to save to Pinterest!

1. I’m new to essential oils. How are they used? – Each bottle of Young Living essential oil is labeled with directions for how that oil can be used, and these directions vary based on location. Check the product label for appropriate use directions. The label will tell you whether the oil should be inhaled or diffused, applied topically and how much to dilute, as well as if it can be taken internally as a dietary supplement. It’s also a good idea to have a reliable reference guide when using essential oils.

2. I see the term “carrier oil” used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it? – A carrier oil is a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil that can be used to dilute EO. YL V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex is an excellent carrier oil for all applications. Carrier oils ensure that EOs applied topically are comfortable. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the EO, and prevents waste due to excessive application. Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine or petroleum derivatives (petrolatum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils. Some people choose to avoid olive oil as a carrier oil because of its strong aroma and thick viscosity.

3. What is a hot oil? – “Hot oils” are oils that, when applied to the skin, can cause a hot or burning sensation. YL recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first use. To perform a patch test, apply 1-2 drops of EO to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1-2 hours for any noticeable reaction; usually reactions occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation or if you develop a rash, add V-6 carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed. Examples of “hot” oils include cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, peppermint, oregano, thyme, Exodus II, and Thieves.

4. What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation? – If discomfort or irritation occurs, stop using the EO, and apply V-6 or other carrier oil to the affected area. Never use water in an attempt to flush the oil off the skin, as this may increase discomfort. If a rash occurs this may be a sign of detoxification; drink adequate water to encourage the release and removal of body toxins. Toxins present in petrochemical based soaps and skin care products, detergents and perfumes may trigger some of the detoxification reactions. Consider discontinuation of these agents if a reaction occurs. Before using the EO again, perform a patch test (see above) and dilute with carrier oil as needed. Water drives oil into the skin and the eyes. If EO gets in your eye, flush with V-6 carrier oil to alleviate any discomfort. Discomfort should be alleviated within minutes. If eye discomfort does not subside within 5 minutes, please seek medical attention. Be aware that some documents suggest diluting the oil with water. Please dilute with carrier oil to ensure that discomfort is alleviated as quickly as possible.

5. Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas? – You should avoid
contact with EOs and sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals and mucous
membranes. If you choose to use the oil in any sensitive area, dilute 1 drop of the
essential oil to 5-10 drops of V-6 carrier oil.

6. How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use? – Proper usage is
indicated on each EO label. Please follow label instructions. The idea of “if a little is
good, a lot is better” is not always correct. Essential oils are very potent and
powerful– start low and go slow. In most cases 1-2 drops are adequate and using
more may waste product. Depending on the EO you can gradually build up to 3-4
uses per day if desired. Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for
adverse reactions.

7. Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing? – As with any medical
condition it is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the
advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is
experienced in EO usage. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and
excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Tansy (Tanacetum
vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and Wintergreen
(Gaultheria procumbens) as well as the blends and supplements that contain these
oils.

8. Can essential oils be used on children? – Many EOs are appropriate for use with
children, and they should be diluted prior to use. Some YL products are pre-diluted
with carrier oil as indicated on product label and are intended for direct application
on children. Children generally respond well to EO, and use of a carrier oil is
recommended. One-2 drops of EO such as Lavender, SleepyIze, RutaVala, Gentle Baby and
Peace & Calming may be diluted in carrier oil and applied to the bottom of the feet.

9. How does exposure to sun affect essential oil use? – Some EOs, especially citrus oils, contain natural molecules that react with sunlight (UV light) and cause a sensitivity reaction. All YL EOs and oil blends that contain these compounds are labeled with a warning to avoid sun/UV light for 12 to 48 hours after applying. Caution should always be used when starting to use a new oil: use patch testing (see above), dilute and apply the oil to skin that is protected from sun/UV exposure to reduce the risk of sensitivity. YL beauty and cosmetic products are formulated to remove sun-sensitizing agents to reduce the risk of sun sensitivity.

10. What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition? Can essential oils interact with prescription medications? – If you have a disease or medical condition, or if you are using a prescription medication, it is recommended that you consult with a health advisor who has experience with EOs prior to using an EO. Seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between the medication(s) and the essential oil(s).

The NON-TOXIC way to Banish the Dirty Diaper Smell from your nursery

Is your baby’s diaper pail stinking up the whole room? Ours was and after much trial and error I’ve finally found a solution! A Non-Toxic solution using two simple ingredients!

A non toxic way to eliminate dirty diaper odors

Click image to save to Pinterest!

I may be naive, but I thought the whole point of using a diaper pail was to contain those poopy diaper smells!? Maybe we just have the wrong one, because our diaper pail does not! It’s cute, but not an effective option for keeping our daughter’s nursery from stinking like a dirty diaper from the moment you enter the room. So after many attempts to find a natural and non-toxic remedy I’ve finally found something that works! And it’s so easy, I just have to share!

All you need is Baking Soda and Melaleuca Alternifolia (tea tree oil), this is one of the new oils now included in the Premium Starter Kit from Young Living. When I first bought my kit this oil was not included. I recently ordered a bottle to have on hand for this winter to use if needed. This is a great oil to have in your natural medicine cabinet. Since this was a new oil for me, I have been doing a lot of reading on how it can be used and decided to give it a try in my battle against the diaper pail.

If you’d like to give this a try,

All you do is add about 5 drops of Melaleuca Alternifolia to about a 1/4 cup of baking soda and pour it in your diaper pail bag. I am so pleased to have finally found something that not only works, but also keeps the chemicals out of my lil’ baby’s room!

Hopefully, this will save you from the trial error time it took me to come to a natural solution!

Happy Oiling,

Reveal Radiant Skin and banish breakouts with this all natural DIY scrub and mask

I’m a DIY girl at heart and I LOVE making my own products! It’s an easy way to avoid toxic chemicals and save money. Plus, it’s FUN! Now that we’re in the swing of winter, my skin needed some extra love. The dry air tends to make my skin look dull and feel tight, so I knew I needed to create something that would exfoliate, nourish, and moisturize my skin. I have acne prone skin, so I wanted to address that too. I chose each ingredient to address these needs and I couldn’t be happier with the results. This Face and body scrub/face mask has revealed a radiant and clear complexion for me, which is why I just LOVE this simple creation so much I had to share it with you! I have used this for about a month a few times a week. Now, I’m not one to wear makeup everyday. Usually when I’m out running errands and catch a glimpse of my face in the mirror sans make up, lets just say I’m not thrilled, but yesterday I caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview mirror on a bright sunny day and I couldn’t believe how nice my skin looked.

How to make your own all natural Honey Lemon Sugar Scrub

Whenever I make my own products, I like to keep it simple, using as few ingredients as possible. Each ingredient has to be high quality and serve a purpose. For this recipe I was thrilled because I already had everything in my kitchen (yes, I keep a bottle of lemon essential oil in my kitchen and one in my bathroom too!)

Make your own sugar scrub with Lemon Essential Oil from Young Living

If the dry winter air has been wreaking havoc on your skin or you would like a natural way to combat breakouts, you have to give this a try!

Here is a list of what you’ll need to make this Lemon Honey Sugar Scrub and face mask.

Organic Cane Sugar – Sugar is a natural exfoliator, as well as a natural source of glycolic acid, which serves to even out skin tone, cleanse pores, and improves overall appearance by sloughing off dead skin cells.

Organic or Non-GMO, Cold Processed Extra Virgin Olive Oil –  (Did you know that the purest and best quality olives oil comes from California?) – Olive oil heals acne scarring, and is high in vitamin E which is soothing, moisturizing, and healing to the skin, as well as being high in antioxidants which prevents premature aging of the skin.

Raw Organic Honey – (I recommend using raw honey because it contains natural antibacterial properties, enzymes, and probiotics that are good for the skin.) – The antibacterial properties benefit acne prone skin by reducing breakouts. Honey is a natural humectant so it locks water into the skin keeping the complexion hydrated. Also, a natural source of antioxidants which aids the skin from premature aging.

One Organic Lemon – Lemon juice is incredibly beneficial to the skin. It helps to diminish scars and age spots, heal acne, exfoliate, and brighten your complexion.

Young Living Lemon Essential Oil – Is cold pressed from the lemon rind, it has a strong, purifying citrus scent which is revitalizing and uplifting. It does a good job of covering up the olive oil smell, which I’m not a big fan of. Don’t tell my italian relatives I said that ;). I chose this oil for more than its fragrance though. Young Living’s Lemon essential oil contains 68% d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant. Great for reducing wrinkles, minimizing sun and age spots, as well as combating acne. By combining this essential oil with the lemon juice you’re getting the benefits of the entire lemon.

An Airtight Glass Container

I bought mine at the container store, here is a link to the one I used.

Instructions:

Add a 1/2 cup of Sugar to a glass bowl, pour in 1/4 cup olive oil, and mix with a fork. You can use more or less olive oil depending on the consistency you want. Add in a heaping TBSP of honey, half the juice of one lemon and mix well, again you can adjust how much honey and lemon juice you use, last add in 10 drops of lemon essential oil and mix. Then transfer to your airtight glass container! Voila, get ready for gorgeous luxurious feeling skin!!!

Mix up your own sugar scub using Young Living Lemon Essential Oil

Storage and Use

Store in an airtight glass jar and keep out of direct sunlight. I keep mine in my bathroom cabinet and I use a clean spoon to scoop out.

For the Face:

Add a scoop to your palm and apply in a circular motion careful not to use too much pressure, let the scrub do the work. I have skin that is prone to break out so I like to leave it on for 5-10 minutes for a deep pore cleaning. Then I just wash off with warm water and pat dry. I would recommend using this at night and no more than three times a week.

For the Body:

Just rub a small amount all over in circular motions, great for rough spots like your feet, elbows, knees, and cuticles. You can also use this as a base for shaving to achieve the smoothest shave ever! Rinse with warm water and bask in your glowing silky soft skin!

If you’re new to using essential oils and would like more information, I’m always happy to chat. PS, Lemon essential oil comes in the Premium Starter Kit, see below for more details on how you can save big and get started making the switch to a natural way of health and beauty!

Happy Oiling,
